The Sheiks at the 1984 New Orleans World's Fair |
 |
| While technically hailing from St. Louis, The Sheiks played
many New Orleans area venues often enough to be considered local. They often played at
Jimmy's, Ole' Man Rivers, and the Riverboat President, as well as in Baton Rouge, Slidell,
Thibodeaux, Gulfport, Destin, and more. The band often traveled up and down the "55 Highway,"
frequenting their hometown of St. Louis and making regular visits to Memphis and Chicago.
Mike Collins captured and contributed the photo above. It's The Sheik's Michael O'Hara (keyboads &
vocals) and Leslie (Marty) Martin on lead guitar performing at the 1984 World's Fair in New
Orleans. Get to more of Mike's shots with the links below. Or enjoy the video below of
The Sheiks performing 55 Highway in Baton Rouge in August of 1982.
