Grateful Dead Bassist Phil Lesh Dies

Founding member of rock band The Grateful Dead, Phil Lesh, has died. He was 84 years old. Lesh sang lead vocals on some of the band’s most memorable songs, including “Box of Rain” off the 1970 album American Beauty, which he composed alongside longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, and Unbroken Chain off 1974’s From the Mars Hotel.

NASA Artemis Report Blames Michoud Assembly Workforce Training

A NASA inspector general's report partly blames a poorly-trained Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF) workforce for a plethora of problems where the Artemis Program Exploration Upper Stage is being manufactured by Boeing. Welsing and quality control have been issues. Propellant tanks that did not meet specifications directly led to a seven-month delay in the program. [8/9/2024]

John Mayall Dies at Age 90

Legendary British blues entusiast and band leader died at his California home on July 22 at the age of 90. He formed a band called the Bluesbreakers in 1963 that was steeped in American blues. Otis Rush, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, and Elmore James were its inspirations. Eric Clapton of Cream, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, and others did stints in the Bluesbreakers. [7/24/2024]

Moby Grape Guitarist Jerry Miller Dead At Age 81

Founding Moby Grape member, Jerry Miller, died July 20th in Tacoma, Washington, at the age of 81. He'd been called “the greatest guitar player in the world” by legendary guitarist Eric Clapton. Miller’s cause of death has not been publicly shared. [7/23/2024]

Former President Trump Nearly Assassinated

Former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated at a campaign rally in Bethel, Pennsylvainia, just north of Pittsburgh on July 13, 2024. A bullet whizzed through his right ear lobe. It was fired by a Democrat donor, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, from a rooftop about 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking. Secret Service personnel and the President ducked below a low bullet proof barrier on the stage while government snipers fired and killed Crooks. [7/14/2024]

Astronaut William Anders Perishes

Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders, who photographed the iconic "Earthrise" from lunar orbit on Christmas Eve in 1968, died piloting a Beechcraft T-34 Mentor which crashed in the San Juan Islands near Seattle on June 7 at the age of 90. A huge enlargement of the Anders photo adorns the inside north wall of Building 103, the 43-acre main manufacturing building of the NASA Michoud Assembly Facilty in New Orleans East, whene the Apollo Saturn V Moon rockets were built.
